Bricklayers are responsible for building walls, repairing them, or doing both in close consultation with construction plans.

The profession of bricklaying can be seen around us every day as being one of great importance, with a wide potential for work including jobs building walls, chimneys, arches and housing.

Required Skills

Working Hours


Normal working hours for a bricklayer are 39 hours per week - dependent on the season and how much available daylight there is. As a result of these changeable conditions; weekend, evening or even all-night shifts are quite commonplace.

Specialise in archway construction and restoration.

Chimney Builder

Build and repair industrial, domestic and commercial chimney stacks.

Refractory Bricklayer

High temperature brickwork - create acid brick, fire brick and other materials for high temperature refractory structures.


Renew external mortar joints to prevent water damage to properties.

Brick paving

Create paving for pathways and pavements.

Sturdy shoes with a protective toe box and non-slip soles

Eye/Face shields

Heat-insulating gloves


Required Tools

Brick trowel

An essential tool for bricklayers, this trowel is useful for laying and smoothing mortar to cement bricks into place.

Pointing trowel

Much smaller than the brick trowel, this tool is better suited to fine detail work, including the application of mortar between previously laid bricks or using it to create a professional finish.

Spirit level

A must have for all bricklayers, this widely used tool helps ensure that layers are perfectly horizontal.

Lump hammer

Robust one-handed hammer perfect for helping cut bricks into shape.

Brick bolster chisel

A specialised chisel with a wide flat blade used with the lump hammer to cut brickwork.
