Carpenters are responsible for wood-based construction. As such, the carpentry trade is one with a huge variety of work available.

Jobs can range from full scale projects such as the craft of buildings to creating sets of shelving.

Working Hours

Carpentry has fairly intensive working hours - you can expect to work 45 hours per week with the possibility of overtime at weekends or on evenings, with some contracts demanding that you work away from home for them.

Shop-fitting

You can find yourself constructing window and door frames, shelving and partitions for shops, offices, restaurants, council buildings and any number of public structures.

Machining

Measure and cut to shape floorboards and window frames.

Bench carpentry

If you prefer the idea of crafting fine furniture pieces then a career in bench carpentry will suit you.

Site-work

Fit large structures such as staircases on a major site at development stage.

Formwork joiners

Create temporary ‘shuttering’ to aid the installation of concrete formwork on a construction site.

Augers/Drills

The perfect device for boring holes in wood, its simple time honoured corkscrew design produces extremely clean holes.

Saws

Perhaps the most obvious tool a carpenter requires, a good handsaw will help you cut pieces of wood into different shapes.

Plumb-bob

This small string suspended weight is used to test plumb lines. It stops swinging when perfectly vertical.

Clamps

A classic fastening device to secure an object tightly to a bench or to another object - this will quite obviously be a must have tool for construction and woodworking.

Rulers, squares, levels and compasses

Measuring tool are an integral part of a carpenter’s job - the work often demands high levels of precision, and these items will ensure you can plot your work carefully and professionally.
