Red CISRS Card - Trainee Scaffolder

What is a Red (Trainee Scaffolder) CISRS Card?

The Red CISRS Trainee Scaffolder card is suitable for new hires and existing workers. It grants them access to carded areas of a worksite and perform supervised scaffolding-related tasks, but does not allow them to set up or dismantle scaffolding.

What qualifications will I need?

To gain a Red CISRS Card, you’ll need to have one of the following. Those listed below must be completed within 2 years of the date of application.

  • CITB Health, Safety and Environment certification
  • Completion of CISRS Recognised Scaffolding Apprenticeship Induction (Initial Trainee card only)
  • IOSH Working Safely/IOSH Managing Safely/IOSH Directing Safely
  • FAS Safe Pass
  • NEBOSH Construction certificate
  • SSSTS or SMSTS certificate
  • CCNSG Safety Passport
  • CISRS Scaffolder Refresher Course
  • MIST/BOSIET/OPITO Approved Offshore Certificate

You will need a either a Part 1 qualification or valid COTS certificate, which remains valid for one year once issued.

You will also need your employer’s endorsement on your application form.

What will I need to renew the card?

If you qualified with your COTS certificate, you’ll need to have achieved Part 1 to renew.

If you qualified with your Part 1, you’ll need to earn your Part 2 to renew.

You may only renew this card once.

How long is the certification valid?

The first time your Red Trainee card is issued, it is valid for 18 months. Over these 18 months, trainees are expected to undertake further construction training, seeking higher certification. Trainees are also expected to complete the initial section of the CISRS training course in that time.

Once these prerequisites have been fulfilled, the Trainee may be issued with a renewed Red Trainee Card, which will be valid for a further 18 months. Trainees are expected to complete their NVQ level 2, and the CISRS Part 2 Training Course (or, alternatively, gain their Assessed Route Certification) within that time.

What is the next step?

As the card may not be renewed a second time, trainees will be expected to qualify for a Blue CISRS Scaffolder card after 36 months.
