CPCS A63 Pedestrian Operated Tower Crane

What is the course?

The CPCS A63 Pedestrian Operated Tower Crane course provides candidates with both the theory and practical knowledge to be able to safely and effectively operate a Pedestrian Operated Crane. It is a step towards candidates successfully passing their CPCS Tests.

Course content

How to safely and effectively operate the crane
Understanding the recognised signals for controlling operations
Appreciation of safe loads within capacity of the crane
How to maintain a crane and carry out minor adjustments
Understanding the capabilities of equipment, safety precautions and procedures to place crane out of service
Understanding of lifting capacity and safe working radius
Safe load indicators and overload warnings
Maintenance of counterweights and related checking procedures
Principles of safe slinging, capacities of lifting gear and effect of shock loading on strength and stability of crane structure
Up-to-date regulations and Codes of Practice in relation to lifting equipment, including operator’s legal responsibility

How is the course taught and assessed?

The course is taught over 4-5 days via both discussions of the theoretical aspects of the role and practical exercises. Assessment is carried out with examinations of both elements.

Who should take this course?

This course is ideal for existing and potential operators of Pedestrian Operated Tower Cranes and those with no formal training.

There are two specific subtypes of machinery available to candidates on this course:

A63A: Up to 36m-100m/te
A63B: Inclined jib

What qualification will I receive?

Successful candidates will be awarded a CITB National Construction College certificate, and upon completion of the CPCS Technical Tests, the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Entry requirements

All applicants must have a good knowledge of both written and spoken English. They must also have taken and passed, within the last two years, a CITB Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test.

What can I do next?

Upon completion of the CPCS A63 course candidates may with to consider courses for the roles of Telescopic Handler, Slinger/Signaller, Crawler Crane or for the Competent Operator Card.
