IPAF Static Boom Operator (1b)

What is the course?

The IPAF Static Boom Operator (1b) course is aimed at people who use powered access. It is also suitable for people who supervise or manage powered access use.

The powered access covered by the course includes:

  • Scissor lifts
  • Trailer mounted boom lifts
  • Self-propelled boom lifts
  • Aerial work platforms

Course content

The course includes:

  • MEWP categories
  • Structural parts
  • Hazards
  • Pre-use inspection and handovers
  • Safe operating methods
  • General regulations - ISO 18878, European, HASAWA, MHSW
  • Specific regulations - PUWER, LOLER, WAHR
  • Accident reporting and RIDDOR

How is the course taught and assessed?

The IPAF Static Boom Operator (1b) course is a one day course. It starts with an introduction and a pre-course theory test. As well as the theory there is also practical training. The course ends with a theory test and a practical assessment.

What qualification will I receive?

People who successfully complete the IPAF Static Boom Operator (1b) course receive an IPAF Certificate and an IPAF Smart Powered Access Licence (PAL) Card. The PAL Card is valid for 5 years.

If you already have a PAL Card the Static Boom (1b) category will be added to your PAL Card and the expiry date of the card will remain the same.

Entry requirements

To take the IPAF Static Operator (1b) course you will need to be fluent in both written and spoken English.
