Red CPCS Card - Trained Operator

Why do I need a CPCS Card?

The Red (Trained Operator) CPCS card shows employers that you have all the training and technical skills required to operate a particular category of plant on a construction site, but that you still lack extensive practical experience in doing so.

A Red CPCS card allows you to work in carded areas of the worksite and work towards an NVQ or SVQ, which will in turn qualify for your Blue (Competent Operator) card.

Red CPCS card holders are expected to work under the close supervision of a manager or a more experienced plant operator at all times.

What qualifications will I need?

Before you can receive a Red (Trained Operator) CPCS card, you must pass a relevant CITB HS&E test and pass the CPCS Technical Tests in the related category of CPCS Course, which include:

  • A Theory Test (within 2 years of passing the HS&E Test)
  • A Practical Test (within 6 months of passing the Technical Test and within 2 years of passing the HS&E Test)

The category of the tests will differ depending on which course you have chosen. When you have successfully passed the CPCS Technical Tests, the accredited test centre you have chosen will apply for the Red (Trained Operator) Card for you.

Alternatively, those holding existing Red CPCS Cards which are still within their 12 month grace period may apply for a 12-month extension if they are already registered for a relevant NVQ or SVQ.

How long is the certification valid for?

The Red (Trained Operator) CPCS Card is valid for two years. It can be renewed only once, and only if certain criteria are met.

What is the next step?

Once you have proven yourself competent (both with practical experience and by gaining a relevant SVQ or NVQ), you should apply for your Blue (Competent Operator) CPCS Card.
