What is SMSTS Day Release?
Health and safety is an extremely important part of any construction project.
If you’re in a supervisory or managerial role you must be fully qualified when it comes to health and safety and a great way to do this is to get your SMSTS (site management safety training scheme) certificate.
To gain your SMSTS certificate you will need to take the five day SMSTS course.
This course will give you all the knowledge and information you will need to be able to comply with all construction site rules and regulations including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
The course can be taken in one week. If you are unable to attend a full week, there is also the SMSTS day release option:
Why choose day release?
The day release option means that you can take the course one or two days per week which gives you the option of spreading the course out rather than having to do it all in one week.
With the day release option you can also get a short review of the previous day’s subjects as a refresher which gives you the chance to settle back into the course.
The course duration is 37.5 hours of tuition time excluding breaks. Additional homework is also recommended.
What does the course involve?
The course is intended to help people manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal regulations. There are many areas of health and safety regulations covered on the SMSTS day release course including:
- The Health and Safety at work act
- CDM regulations 2007
- Risk assessments
- Working at height/Scaffolding
Core exercises and case studies
During the SMSTS day release course you will carry out a number of group exercises, these are to assess your performance and interaction within the group. During these you will need to pass the three core exercises. These are:
- Implementing health and safety legislation
- Managers and supervisors responsibilities
- Site briefing
You will also need to pass the case study exercise. There are various case study exercises including:
- House building
- Civil engineering
- New roads and street work
What happens at the end of the course?
After you have taken the SMSTS day release course you will take a multiple choice test to qualify for the SMSTS certificate, you must attend all five days of the course and pass the test to gain your certificate.
If you are taking the day release option it is vitally important that you take the course days in the correct order.
If you do not attend all five days of the course you will not qualify for the certificate and the course will have to be taken again.
How long is the certificate valid for?
The SMSTS certificate is valid for 5 years, when this runs out you will need to take a 2 day refresher course which will renew the certificate for a further 5 years.
