A joiner works in a workshop, and will shape, cut and assemble wood components to form structures and fittings.

The structures and fittings joiners build can range from the construction of furniture to entire homes. The difference between joinery and carpentry is that a joiner does not use screws or nails in their work.

Working Hours


Joinery has varied working hours - you can expect to work 45 hours per week with the possibility of overtime at weekends or on evenings.

You can find yourself constructing window and door frames, shelving and partitions for shops, offices, restaurants, council buildings and any number of public structures.


Measure and cut to shape floorboards and window frames.

Bench joiners

If you prefer the idea of crafting fine furniture pieces then a career in bench joinery will suit you.


Fit large structures such as staircases on a major site at development stage.

Formwork joiners

Create temporary ‘shuttering’ to aid the installation of concrete formwork on a construction site.

Perfect for cleaning grooves, cutting edges, creating joints and trimming and finishing, a good range of different sized chisels will help simplify a wide variety of tasks.


Perhaps the most obvious tool a carpenter requires, a good hand saw will help you cut pieces of wood into different shapes.


Another carpentry tool that has been around for centuries, this small string suspended weight is used to test plumb lines. It stops swinging when perfectly vertical - particularly useful for quick and accurate plumbing of door frames and other vertical structures.


A classic fastening device to secure an object tightly to a bench or to another object - this will quite obviously be a must have tool for construction and woodworking.

Rulers, squares, levels and compasses

Measuring tools are an integral part of a carpenter’s job - the work often demands high levels of precision, and these items will ensure you can plot your work carefully and professionally.
