NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) is an independent examination board that provides vocational qualifications in health, safety & environmental practice and management in the UK.
NEBOSH develops syllabuses for its qualifications and sets methods of assessment, such as examinations and practical coursework.
It does not deliver its courses directly instead NEBOSH accredited providers deliver the courses. NEBOSH offers qualifications at three different levels; Award, Certificate and Diploma, Diploma being the most advanced course level.
The NEBOSH qualification that is most relevant to workers in the construction industry is the National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety. The NEBOSH construction certificate is considered one of the most significant and important qualifications available at construction/building management level and it is usually completed by Supervisors, CDM Co-ordinators and Managers.
The training course, which candidates will undertake to achieve the NEBOSH construction certificate, provides all learners with the skills and knowledge to manage a workforce safely and appropriately and be able to recognise potential hazards and dangers on their construction site or in their workplace. The NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety comprises of three units that must be completed in order to complete the course and achieve the certificate. These units are:
Unit 1 - Management of Health and Safety
Unit 2 - Managing & Controlling Hazards in Construction Activities
Unit 3 - Construction Health & Safety Practical
The first unit of the NEBOSH Construction Certificate, the Management of Health and Safety, covers general Health and Safety in the workplace and it is a standard unit across all NEBOSH certificates no matter which type of certificate you are undertaking.
The second unit, Managing & Controlling Hazards in Construction Activities, is specific to the construction certificate and it covers all aspects of construction Health and Safety including:
The second unit also covers the Hazards and Controls associated with the following areas:
The third and final unit of the NEBOSH Construction Certificate, the Construction Health & Safety Practical, is a practical unit that involves candidates undertaking an independent site inspection. During the inspection the candidate must detect common hazards and assess of whether they are adequately controlled, and if not how would the candidate proceed with his/her own control methods. The site inspection and control assessment must then be translated into a report with the aim of informing and motivating the management on the remedial measures that should be engaged.
Candidates are awarded the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety on successful completion of all three course units.
