Quantity surveyors are in charge of the overall costs of a building and civil engineering project. From beginning to end they seek to minimise working costs.


Required NVQ

Graduate Red Technical Management & Supervisory CSCS Card

NVQ Trainee

Gold CSCS Card (Supervisors)

NVQ Level 3

Black CSCS Card (Managers)

NVQ Level 4

White/Yellow PQP CSCS Card

Working Hours


These can vary quite considerably for surveyors. Private practice/local government surveyors may have more standard working hours (8am-5.30pm), while those who are actively on-site will most likely be required for an entire days work (8am-8pm).

A particularly important role for the construction industry for obvious reasons - you will help customers develop strategies to manage risk.

Capital allowances and tax

Capital allowance specialists with a background as a quantity surveyor are now preferable to tax accountants in identifying building materials eligible for capital allowance tax.

Legal services and dispute resolution

The construction industry lives and dies by its contractual agreements, so legal services are an indispensable part of a project. Draft and propose contracts, and resolve any conflicts as they arise.

Supply chain management

Take charge of where you get everything from and how you get it to your intended destination. You will need to establish good working relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.
