Welders join materials together, usually either metals or thermoplastics which are melted into place with a filler material.

Welding work can be seen on buildings, bridges and machinery, and is commonly used for vehicles such as cars and ships, making it a field of differing job scales and wide career opportunity.

Working Hours

37-40

Welders generally work between 37 and 40 hours per week. Shiftwork is also common, and there may be occasions where you need to put in some overtime hours to stay on schedule.

Commercial diver

You will learn how to do underwater cutting, fitting and rigging, nondestructive tests and underwater photography.

Welding inspector

Perform final inspection of finished welded products to meet customer requirements and complete inspection documentation, procedures and reports.

Structural metal worker

Help create and install iron or steel beams, girders and columns.

Pipefitter/Steamfitter

Refurbishment and renewal works on pumps, pipes and valves.

Welding engineer

Direct welding operations in accordance with contractual obligations to produce an acceptable end product for the customer.

Welders hood

A welding hood has a glass face which filters out UV rays, enabling you to see what you are working on.

Angle Grinder

The angle grinder consists of a changeable rough disc on a rotation shaft that cuts through metal and cleans up welds.

Slag hammer

This specifically designed hammer removes the protective flux from a weld bead so that you can either paint metal or grind it down.

Wire brush

A simple tool, but one that is excellent for removing paint or surface rust to make your job easier. Also useful for cleaning up your area of work when you are finished.

MIG Pliers

These pliers have a specially designed nose that fits inside the nozzle of a gun, making it easy to remove any excess welding debris.
