Health & Safety in a Construction Environment

What is the course?

This five day course is designed to give attendees the skills and knowledge they need to work on construction sites safely and reduce the risk of injury to themselves and others. It provides a basic qualification in health and safety site knowledge which is now necessary for anyone seeking a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Labourer Card.

Course content

Risk Assessment, Health and Safety

Identifying health risks on a construction site
Recognising asbestos and other hazardous substances that may be present on a construction site
Using PPE when dealing with hazardous materials

Manual Handling Safety

Understanding the relevant regulations for mechanical lifting, manual handling as well as moving and storing materials.
Understanding the injuries and health risks improper manual handling can cause
Techniques for reporting accidents and potential dangers

Working Safely at Height

Understanding the relevant regulations for working at heights
Recognising the hazards working at heights presents
Using the proper equipment at heights

Plant and Equipment Safety

Plant and equipment safety standards and regulations
Understanding the health and injury risks plant and machinery can present
Eliminating and/or limiting plant and machinery-related dangers

How is the course taught and assessed?

This course is taught in a classroom by a qualified health and safety professional. It will involve individual work and may also include working in groups. Your participation and group contribution will be assessed, as will your performance on a multiple-choice test.

What qualification will I receive?

Successful completion of this course will earn a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. This qualification is valid for life.

Entry requirements

This course is appropriate for those with no previous construction safety training, and anyone seeking qualification as a Labourer in a construction context. Fluency in written and spoken English is required to take this course.
