CPCS A17 Telescopic Handler

What is the course?

The CPCS A17 Telescopic Handler course provides a basic training and assessment in how to operate and maintain telescopic handlers.

Course content

How to operate the machinery for basic tasks
How to evaluate the safety of loads in terms of lifting
Routine servicing procedures and maintenance in relation to specific manufacturer instruction
Understanding of load, size, weight, gradients and conditions of the site and their effects on stability of machinery
Appreciation of maintenance requirements and how to operate the machinery fully
How to load, transport and store different types of materials
Understanding of basic construction of pallets

How is the course taught and assessed?

Candidates will be taught through a mixture of practical exercises and tutorials based in the classroom. Assessment is carried out via tests in both theory and practical elements.

Who should take this course?

This course is ideal for existing and potential operators of telescopic handlers who have had no formal training, or require refreshment to their training certification.

There are five specific subtypes available to candidates on this course:

A17A: Industrial Telescopic
A17B: Up to 9 metres
A17C: All sizes excluding 360-degree slew
A17D: All sizes including 360-degree slew
A17E: Suspended load (non-rough terrain)

Depending on the level of experience for candidates the course length differs. For inexperienced candidates the course length is 5 days, for a novice it is 4 days and for experienced operatives the course is 3 days.

What qualification will I receive?

Successful candidates will be awarded the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card (on completion of the CPCS Technical Tests) and the CITB National Construction College certificate.

Entry requirements

Within the last two years candidates must have successfully completed a CITB Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test. A good knowledge of both written and spoken English is required.
